The 1991 murders of four teenage girls at a frozen yogurt shop in Austin, Texas, remain one of the most haunting unsolved crimes in the country. Now, a new HBO docuseries revisits the chilling case with fresh eyes.
The Yogurt Shop Murders premiered its first episode on Sunday, August 3. The four-part series, which debuted earlier this year at SXSW, is now streaming on Max. New episodes are released every Sunday night.
Described by HBO as “a haunting four-part HBO Original documentary series from award-winning filmmaker Margaret Brown,” the project comes from the creator of the 2022 documentary Descendant, which traced the legacy of the last known slave ship to the U.S.
“In 1991, four teenage girls were found murdered inside a frozen yogurt shop in Austin, Texas—a crime so brutal it shocked the nation and shattered a city’s sense of safety,” HBO says. “Decades later, the case remains unsolved, marked by false confessions, questionable convictions, and enduring grief.”
The network adds that the series “unravels the tangled web of a botched investigation and explores the emotional toll left on families, investigators, and a community still seeking justice.” Brown, known for her careful storytelling, brings renewed urgency to a case that has long demanded answers.
PEOPLE previously covered the grisly crime in 2023, detailing the deaths of Eliza Thomas, 17, Jennifer Harbison, 17, Sarah Harbison, 15, and Amy Ayers, 13.

Firefighters initially responded to what they believed was a routine fire at the yogurt shop. But investigators quickly determined the blaze had been intentionally set—an apparent effort to destroy evidence.
Over the years, dozens of individuals have falsely confessed to the murders. Authorities concentrated their attention on four teenage boys, three of whom had confessed by 1999. However, as PEOPLE reported, flaws in the investigation and prosecution led to those convictions unraveling. By 2009, all four men had been released from prison and cleared of the charges.

Decades later, the victims’ families are still waiting for justice.
“They’re not forgotten,” Angie Ayers, the wife of Amy Ayers’ brother, told PEOPLE. “They’re not given up on.”
The Yogurt Shop Murders airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO, with episodes available to stream on Max.
