Russian satellite surveillance provided the tactical foundation for an Iranian missile strike on a U.S. air base in Saudi Arabia, according to Ukrainian intelligence shared by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In an interview Saturday, Zelenskyy revealed that Russian satellites captured detailed imagery of the Prince Sultan Air Base on March 20, 23, and 25. On March 26, Iran launched a targeted strike on the installation, wounding several American service members.
The Intelligence Pipeline
Zelenskyy stated he is “100%” confident that Moscow is actively sharing intelligence with Tehran to facilitate attacks on U.S. forces across the Middle East. Ukrainian spy agencies identified a “triple-shot” pattern of Russian surveillance that Kyiv recognizes as a precursor to imminent kinetic action.
“If they make images once, they are preparing,” Zelenskyy said. “The third time it means that in one or two days, they will attack.”
While U.S. officials confirmed that injuries to American personnel were not life-threatening, the coordination suggests a deepening military alliance between Russia and Iran. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denied providing intelligence to Tehran, though he admitted Moscow continues to supply military hardware under existing pacts.
Putin’s Strategic Benefit
The Ukrainian leader argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin is actively rooting for a protracted conflict in the Middle East. A regional war serves two primary Kremlin objectives:
- Economic Gain: Rising global oil prices and the temporary easing of U.S. energy sanctions bolster the Russian treasury.
- Military Diversion: The conflict threatens to drain U.S. stockpiles of missile interceptors, potentially diverting critical air defense assets away from the Ukrainian front.
“If sanctions are lifted, [Putin] will get more money… and he will put this money to weapons,” Zelenskyy warned.
Stalled Diplomacy
The escalating violence has also paralyzed peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow. Zelenskyy noted that a U.S. mediation team — including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — has been unable to facilitate talks in neutral venues due to the regional crisis. While Ukraine remains open to negotiations in Turkey or Switzerland, Russian officials have reportedly refused to meet on American soil.
Zelenskyy spent the week touring Gulf nations, successfully securing “billions” in defense investment. In exchange, Ukraine will provide battle-tested air defense expertise to help Gulf partners counter the same Iranian-made Shahed drones currently devastating Ukrainian cities.
