Missouri authorities say a dog played a key role in helping officers reunite a lost toddler with their family.

Police in Kansas City, Missouri, reported that officers responded last week after receiving a call about a barefoot toddler found wandering on a street. At first, officials did not know where the child had come from.

While officers were working to identify the toddler, they noticed a dog repeatedly nudging them. The animal then walked away, and the officers decided to follow it. The dog led them to a nearby home, which was later confirmed to be the toddler’s residence. The child was quickly and safely reunited with their family.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the toddler ended up outside alone. The police department later remarked that heroes can come in many forms — sometimes with four legs.

The situation is similar to a recent incident in Kentucky, where a dog also helped police locate a missing child.

In Louisville, Kentucky, a 3-year-old boy was reported missing on January 7. The Louisville Metro Police Department began a large search using drones, aircraft, and ground teams.

During the search, Officer Josh Thompson said a dog approached him and behaved in a way that suggested something was wrong. Thompson followed the animal while continuing to check nearby homes.

A neighbor told Thompson that a young child had rung her doorbell before running toward a house across the street. As Thompson continued searching, the dog stayed close, barking and drawing his attention.

Thompson eventually spoke to the dog, encouraging it to help find the child. The dog then ran toward the backyard, leading officers to a garage and a parked vehicle.

Inside the vehicle, officers found the frightened boy sitting in the front passenger seat. The child was safely reunited with his family.
