Transgender Rep. Sarah McBride: Rahm Emanuel Saying Men Can’t Become Women Is an ‘Overcorrection’

Representative Sarah McBride (D-DE), the first openly transgender member of Congress, called former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s recent comments about transgender issues an “overcorrection,” adding to the ongoing debate within the Democratic Party over how to approach gender and identity politics.

Emanuel recently warned that Democrats risk alienating voters by veering too far left, specifically arguing that “men cannot become women.” In a new interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns, McBride disagreed.

“I don’t believe that that is the place we need to go,” McBride said, responding to Emanuel’s claim. She also accused Republicans of being fixated on the issue of gender, saying the GOP is “obsessed” with it—though she offered no specific examples in the interview.

McBride, who was born biologically male, acknowledged broader frustrations with her own party’s tone, saying:

“I think voters feel like Democrats have sort of been assholes to them.”

Throughout the interview, McBride reflected on internal party divisions, especially on issues surrounding sexuality and gender. She suggested that online activism and discourse, rather than official Democratic messaging, might be fueling voter discontent.

“The reality in today’s environment is that your party ecosystem is defined not just by politicians or the party, but also some of the loudest voices online that in voters’ minds reflect and represent that broader coalition.”

McBride also revisited past criticism from Republicans, including Rep. Keith Self (R-TX), who once referred to her as “Mister McBride.” She previously dismissed such rhetoric as “weird and bizarre.”

Her comments come amid increasing tension within the Democratic Party over how best to engage with culturally divisive issues heading into 2026. While some moderates like Emanuel urge caution and course correction, progressives like McBride are pushing back, insisting the party must continue to defend and center transgender rights.
