A coordinated Iranian missile and drone attack targeted Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Friday, wounding at least 10 U.S. service members and damaging multiple American aircraft.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military assessments, confirmed that two of the wounded are in serious condition. The strike at the al-Kharj facility, a critical hub for American airpower, represents one of the most significant direct hits on U.S. infrastructure since the regional conflict ignited a month ago.

Damage Assessment and Casualties

While the Pentagon continues to assess the full extent of the carnage, independent satellite imagery analyzed Friday appeared to show charred wreckage and debris on the base’s apron. Initial reports indicate several airframes sustained significant damage during the barrage.

The attack brings the total number of U.S. casualties in the month-long war to over 300, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). While the majority of those personnel have returned to duty, 30 remain sidelined, and 13 Americans have been killed since hostilities began. Among the fallen is Army Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington, 26, who died following a previous strike on the same base on March 1.

A Flailing Diplomatic Effort

The escalation comes at a precarious moment for the Trump administration, which has been quietly circulating a 15-point ceasefire proposal through Pakistani intermediaries. Despite these overtures, Tehran has publicly denied that any formal negotiations are underway.

Instead, Iran continues to leverage its geographic control over the Strait of Hormuz. While Tehran signaled Friday it would allow limited humanitarian and agricultural shipments through the waterway following United Nations intervention, the ongoing maritime “chokehold” has already destabilized global fuel prices and rattled international markets.

Pentagon Bolsters Regional Presence

In response to the persistent threat, the Department of Defense is rapidly expanding its footprint in the Middle East. High-level military sources confirm:

  • 82nd Airborne Division: Approximately 1,000 paratroopers are slated for immediate deployment.
  • Marine Expeditionary Units: Two units are currently being positioned, adding 5,000 Marines and thousands of sailors to the theater.

As the administration balances a “maximum pressure” military stance with back-channel diplomacy, the strike at Prince Sultan Air Base underscores the lethal volatility facing U.S. forces stationed in the region.
