Trump Says Truman’s Vision for Part of the White House Residence Was ‘Not Good,’ So He ‘Ripped It Apart’ and Installed Marble

Former President Donald Trump is offering a look inside his latest round of White House renovations.

While speaking about plans for the new White House Ballroom, Trump, 79, shared that he has overseen a number of updates throughout the residence — including a complete redo of the Lincoln Bedroom’s bathroom.

“The bathroom was done by the Truman family a long time ago and done in green tile, and it’s done as — in a style that was not exactly Abe Lincoln,” Trump said. “It’s a style that is not good … it is actually art deco and art deco doesn’t go with 1850 and civil wars.”

He continued, “But what does do it is statuary marble. So I ripped it apart and we built a bathroom that’s absolutely gorgeous and totally keeping in that time because the Lincoln bedroom is so incredible for those of you who have seen it.”

That update isn’t the only project he’s tackled since returning to the White House after his inauguration on January 20. Trump also revealed that he replaced the flooring in the Palm Room.

“[The room] had one-by-one tiles that were put there probably 20 years ago by somebody and they were broken and bad — it’s embarrassing,” he said. “And I took it out and we did a magnificent bookmatched statuary marble floor. We fixed the room. We put up the proper lighting and chandeliers. People walk in, they can’t believe how beautiful it is, and so we had to fix it up.”

The Palm Room now connects directly to Trump’s redesigned Rose Garden, which he has renamed The Rose Garden Club at the White House. The former Kennedy-era lawn was transformed into a paved patio space.

“We have worked very hard to bring it to fruition, and [it’s] not an easy situation, but it’s something that I think we’re all going to enjoy for many, many years to come. It’s a tremendous place,” Trump said during the garden’s reopening on Sept. 5.

Trump’s latest renovations — including the construction of a 90,000-square-foot ballroom above the East Wing — are said to reflect the luxurious atmosphere of his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago.

According to one Palm Beach social source, both Donald and Melania Trump “would prefer to be in Palm Beach,” so their White House updates are “bringing Mar-a-Lago to Washington.”

“Their plans for the White House are being implemented to remind them of Mar-a-Lago,” the source added. “That way, when they aren’t in Palm Beach, they are there in the mind.”
