FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A U.S. State Department employee is dead after allegedly embarking on a violent road rage rampage on Interstate 495 that left one woman dead, three others seriously injured, and ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting.

The Virginia State Police (VSP) identified the suspect on Monday as Jared Llamado, 32, a Foreign Service Officer. The incident, which occurred Sunday afternoon near the nation’s capital, began as a multi-vehicle collision and escalated into a mass stabbing before a responding trooper used deadly force.

Chaos on the Capital Beltway

The sequence of events began at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, on the southbound lanes of I-495 in Fairfax County. According to preliminary investigators, a traffic crash acted as the catalyst for the violence.

Upon arriving at the scene of the reported road rage incident, a Virginia State Police trooper was immediately confronted by Llamado, who was armed with a knife. State police officials confirmed the trooper fired his service weapon in self-defense. Llamado was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, where he later died.

Casualties and Victims Identified

The scene revealed a grim trail of violence involving five human victims and a pet.

  • Michele Adams, 39, was identified as the deceased victim. She succumbed to stab wounds sustained during the encounter.
  • Three additional women, aged 36, 37, and 40, were hospitalized with “serious injuries” following the stabbing.
  • A canine belonging to Llamado was also found stabbed to death at the scene.

Authorities emphasized that Llamado appeared to have no prior connection to any of the victims. None of the women were traveling in the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the crash.

State Department Confirms Suspect’s Identity

The U.S. State Department confirmed on Monday that Llamado was an active-duty Foreign Service Officer. In a statement, a spokesperson called the event a “tragic incident” and extended condolences to the families of those affected.

While the motive remains unclear, investigators have stated there is currently no evidence suggesting the attack was related to terrorism.

“The investigation remains ongoing as we work to determine what led to this senseless act of violence on one of our busiest corridors,” a VSP media release stated.

Administrative Protocols and Next Steps

The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure following any discharge of a firearm. The trooper was not injured during the confrontation.

VSP investigators are currently reconstructing the initial crash and interviewing witnesses to determine the exact timeline between the collision and the start of the stabbing. Southbound I-495 was closed for several hours Sunday as forensic teams processed the extensive scene.
