A stray dog and a leopard had a rare confrontation in Maharashtra’s Nashik, ending with the dog apparently “defeating” the leopard and dragging it for nearly 300 metres. The dramatic incident took place in Niphad, and a video capturing the encounter has quickly gone viral on social media.
Eyewitnesses reported that the leopard had wandered into the area earlier this week. The dog launched a fierce counterattack, clamping onto the leopard and dragging it across a significant distance.
According to those who witnessed the event, the leopard, overwhelmed by the dog’s sudden aggression, eventually broke free and fled. The dog, despite its intense struggle, emerged unharmed. No residents in the area were injured during the confrontation.
Authorities noted that the leopard had retreated into nearby fields with some injuries. Forest officials have not confirmed whether the animal required medical attention but emphasized that villagers and domestic animals in the area remained safe.
This unusual episode in Nashik comes amid a broader national conversation on stray dogs, which reached the Supreme Court on Friday. A three-judge special bench led by Justice Vikram Nath modified its earlier directive restricting the release of vaccinated stray dogs from pounds in Delhi-NCR, describing the previous restriction as “too harsh.”
