Police had previously responded to welfare and mental health–related calls at the Los Angeles home of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, years before the couple was found dead at the residence. Their son, Nick Reiner, who lived on the property, has since been charged in connection with their deaths.

According to law enforcement records, officers were dispatched to the Brentwood home twice in 2019. One call was logged as a welfare check, while the other was classified as mental health–related.

The first incident occurred on Feb. 25, 2019, at 9:51 p.m., when police received a welfare check request that instructed officers to “go to” a woman upon arrival. Officers reached the home at 10:12 p.m., completed the call, and reported the matter to a supervisor.

Several months later, on Sept. 27, 2019, police responded to a mental health–related call involving a male individual. The call was placed at 4:24 p.m., and officers arrived at the residence at 5:07 p.m. After assessing the situation, they reported to a supervisor that there was “no indication of mental illness.”

The records do not identify who contacted police or who was the subject of either call. The Daily Mail was the first outlet to report the existence of the prior police responses.

Nick Reiner, 32, who has previously been reported to receive treatment for schizophrenia, is facing two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege that Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were killed during the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 14, inside their Los Angeles home.

Three days after the bodies were discovered, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that both victims died from multiple sharp-force injuries and ruled the deaths homicides. Authorities arrested Nick approximately six hours after the discovery, near the University of Southern California. He remains in custody without bail, and his arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2026. Investigators have not publicly disclosed a possible motive.

On the night before the killings, Rob Reiner and his son were involved in what sources described as a “very loud argument” at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Nick has spoken publicly in the past about long-standing struggles with addiction and periods of homelessness that began in his teenage years. A source close to the family said that Rob and Michele had made extensive efforts to help their son, but that his challenges were deeply rooted.

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner married in 1989 after meeting while he was directing When Harry Met Sally…. In addition to Nick, they share son Jake and daughter Romy. Rob Reiner was also the adoptive father of daughter Tracy from his marriage to the late Penny Marshall.

In a statement released on Dec. 17, Jake and Romy said the loss of their parents has caused “unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” while asking for privacy and expressing gratitude for public support and condolences.

Rob Reiner was widely celebrated for directing a series of acclaimed films, including This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).
