Woman Says Family Birthday Tradition Is Starting to Feel More Like a ‘Debt Collection Service’

A woman on Reddit shared how her family’s cheerful “birthday club” has become more stressful than celebratory — comparing it to a “debt collection service.”

The tradition began with about 25 family members each sending $25 to whoever’s birthday it was. The idea was simple: the birthday person would receive around $625, creating a fun, communal way to celebrate. “It started out fun and lighthearted,” the original poster wrote, “but lately it’s turned into a daunting task.”

What was once a lively, supportive chat has now become tense. “The minute someone’s birthday hits, people start hounding the chat like bill collectors,” she explained. “‘Who didn’t send yet?’ ‘We’re waiting on three people!’ ‘Y’all know what day it is!’” Messages start coming in early, long before anyone’s had coffee.

Eventually, she’d had enough. “This morning I finally got tired of it and sent a message saying something like, ‘Just a reminder this is supposed to be fun and family-oriented, not a debt collection service.’”

Her comment, however, didn’t land well. “Only two people hearted it,” she noted. “No one else said anything.” The awkward silence made her wonder if she’d overstepped or sounded ungrateful.

She clarified that her frustration wasn’t with the idea itself but with the pressure surrounding it. “The point is not to profit from the birthday club,” she wrote. “It’s just a nice gesture to receive a large lump sum on your birthday.” The tradition was meant to create joy — not obligations.

Still, the tone in the chat made it feel like a chore. “It only gets weird when people start taking it too seriously,” she added, lamenting how something that once celebrated family connection has turned into tension instead.

One Reddit commenter pointed out the irony: “If you’re sending $25 for each of the 25 people, you’re spending $625 a year. Then you get $625 back on your birthday. It’s a net zero. Sounds like a lot of hassle for nothing, lol. NTA.”

The woman agreed in principle but reminded everyone that the purpose was symbolic. “You’re right in theory,” she said, “but the point was to make birthdays feel special without everyone stressing about gifts.”

For now, she’s left wondering whether her message will bring the club back to its original, lighthearted spirit — or if it’s simply the end of a fun family tradition gone too far.
