A woman says she’s struggling to make sense of her relationship with her mother-in-law after discovering that the older woman entered her home while she and her husband were away.

In a post shared on Reddit, the woman explained that she left town for the holidays early on a Monday morning while her husband was at work. Before leaving, she wrote what she described as “a very sweet, special note” for him and placed it on the couch where she knew he would see it.

About 15 minutes before her husband returned home from work, however, she received a notification from her Ring camera.

“I saw my mother-in-law going into my house,” she wrote. “The door was locked, which means she took the spare key and went inside. We live on the same property, but in different houses.”

According to the post, the mother-in-law was inside for around 10 minutes. Because there are no cameras indoors, the woman said she has no idea what her mother-in-law did while she was there.

When her husband arrived home later, he mentioned that there were Christmas presents waiting for him on the kitchen table. But when his wife asked if he’d seen the note she left, he said he couldn’t find it.

“At first I thought maybe a fan blew it onto the floor or under the couch,” she wrote.

Soon after, the husband joined her on the holiday trip, leaving their cat at home. The woman explained that the cat’s food and water are kept inside, but it normally goes outside through a cat door to use the bathroom.

On Christmas Eve, her mother-in-law called and said she saw the cat sitting in the window and asked if she could come inside to let it out. The woman declined, explaining that the cat already had access to food, water, and the cat door.

When the couple returned home after the holidays, they were shocked by what they found.

“There was cat urine and feces everywhere because the door leading to the cat door was shut,” the woman wrote. She initially asked her husband if he had closed it, but he denied doing so. At first, she assumed she might have shut it accidentally.

Then she went looking for the missing note.

“I checked the trash, the outside dumpster, under the couch, under the rug — everywhere,” she wrote. “Unless the cat somehow ate it, my mother-in-law took it.”

The possibility left her deeply unsettled. If her mother-in-law was willing to take a private letter meant for her husband, the woman said she wouldn’t be surprised if she had also closed the door, leaving the cat trapped inside.

The woman said she plans to speak directly with her mother-in-law about what happened, but she also turned to Reddit to ask whether she was overreacting.

Many commenters felt she wasn’t. Several urged her husband to step in and set firm boundaries with his mother, while others suggested taking immediate practical steps.

“Get a keypad lock so there’s no spare key,” one commenter advised. “Or change the locks and move the key. I’d be furious.”

Another echoed the sentiment, adding, “Change the locks — and let your husband handle the conversation with her.”
