Family tensions flared after a 42-year-old woman shared that she’s allowing her 12-year-old daughter to skip her uncle’s upcoming wedding.

In a post on Reddit’s “Am I Overreacting” forum, the mother explained that her daughter was the only cousin not given a role in the ceremony. The groom, 37, included all of his nephews in the wedding party as ushers and ring bearers, but did not involve his only niece in any way. The girl was left feeling “really hurt” and “singled out.”

“She’s the only girl cousin in the family and already struggles with feeling left out,” the woman wrote. “When she realized she was the only cousin without a role, she took it really hard. She cried multiple times and told me she was ‘sick of being the only girl’ and always being left out.”

Hoping to ease the blow, the woman said she “gently” asked her brother if he could find a small part for her daughter — even something simple like passing out programs. He refused, insisting it was too “last minute” and that the wedding party was already set.

“After that conversation, my daughter told me she didn’t want to go,” the mom continued. “She said watching all the cousins walk down the aisle while she sat there ‘like nothing’ would make her feel even worse.”

The girl’s distress only grew as they tried to shop for something for her to wear. “She was crying and clearly overwhelmed,” the mother said.

With her husband’s support, the woman is now leaning toward letting their daughter skip the event entirely and spend the weekend at a friend’s house instead. They worry that forcing her to attend will backfire — that she’ll look miserable in the pews, glare at people, or retreat into her Nintendo Switch for most of the reception.

Their decision has angered several family members, who accuse the mom of allowing her daughter to “throw a tantrum” to get out of a family obligation. Relatives insist the girl should “suck it up,” arguing that “kids don’t get to skip weddings just because they didn’t get attention,” and warning that her absence in photos could be “embarrassing” for the bride and groom.

The mother disagrees. “I personally feel like forcing her to go when she was heartbroken would have made things worse, and I didn’t want her sitting there crying through the ceremony,” she wrote.

Commenters on Reddit largely sided with the mom and her daughter, saying the groom could easily have found a way to include his niece if he’d wanted to. Many users applauded the mother for listening to her child and honoring her feelings.

“Seriously. Can’t include her? Don’t force her to be there!” one top commenter wrote. “This was intentional. She shouldn’t be forced to have a shitty weekend to please people that purposely excluded her.”

Another added, “They could have given her something small to do if they really cared, but they don’t. So you’re free to let her skip it.”
