A woman has rebuilt her life after her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury — and today, her new partner helps her care for him.

Amanda and Matt Robinson first met in 2003 while they were in high school. They married two years later and eventually had two sons.

Their lives changed dramatically in February 2021, when Matt, 42, was involved in a serious car accident that caused a severe head injury.

Matt spent ten months in the hospital. After he was discharged, Amanda, 39, became his full-time caregiver. Over time, the emotional and physical demands became overwhelming, leading Amanda to move Matt into a nearby care facility.

Last April, Amanda met Josh Roy, a country singer, and the two began a relationship. Now, Josh supports Amanda not only as her partner, but also by helping care for Matt.

Reflecting on the accident, Amanda recalled the shock of seeing her husband in the hospital.

“When I went to see him, I was in disbelief,” she said. “His eyes were badly bruised, and there was blood coming from his ears, eyes, and nose. His head was wrapped in bandages. It was devastating.”

Although Matt eventually recovered physically, Amanda explained that his cognitive abilities were severely affected.

“He can respond when spoken to, but he cannot hold a conversation,” she said. “He spends most of the day sitting quietly. He doesn’t know how to ask for food or drink. I have to guide him through basic daily routines.”

Amanda described the emotional toll of watching her husband’s life change so drastically.

“He lost his career, his memories, his relationships — everything,” she said. “He is physically present, but so much of who he was is gone.”

When Amanda decided to move Matt into professional care in 2024, she knew it was necessary for her and her children.

“We had a wonderful life,” she said. “But I also lost many things — my career, time with my children, and my social life. I realized my sons and I needed stability and happiness too.”

Amanda later met Josh, 38, at a local bar where he was performing with his band. They exchanged numbers, and weeks later she attended another of his shows.

During that time, Amanda shared Matt’s story with Josh.

“I don’t think he fully understood at first,” Amanda said. “But after looking at my social media updates about Matt, he told me Matt sounded like an incredible person.”

After their relationship became serious, Josh joined Amanda on one of her visits to see Matt. During the visit, Josh played guitar for him.

Today, Josh actively supports Amanda with Matt’s care, attending medical appointments and assisting with practical needs.

“For years, I handled everything alone,” Amanda said. “Now, I have someone beside me. I’m no longer carrying the weight by myself.”

Amanda’s two sons, now 20 and 16, have also developed a positive relationship with Josh and appreciate his involvement.

Josh acknowledges the unusual nature of their situation and speaks about Matt with deep respect.

“After learning who Matt was before the accident, I have nothing but admiration for him,” Josh said. “I’ve even told Amanda that if he were ever to recover fully, I would gladly step aside so her family could be together again.”

“I enjoy visiting him, and I genuinely care about him,” Josh added. “Amanda is an extraordinary woman.”
