Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing intense public scrutiny after delivering a formal prayer at the Pentagon that featured a fictionalized Bible verse popularized by the 1994 Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction.
The incident occurred last Wednesday during a Pentagon ceremony intended to honor combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions. Hegseth, the former media personality now leading the Department, introduced the passage as a reflection of Ezekiel 25:17. However, the text he recited was the iconic monologue delivered by Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Jules Winnfield, rather than the actual biblical scripture.
During the service, Hegseth adapted the cinematic monologue to include military terminology.
“The path of the downed aviator is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men,” Hegseth stated. He concluded the prayer by referencing a specific call sign: “And you will know my call sign is Sandy-1 when I lay my vengeance upon you.”
While the actual Ezekiel 25:17 focuses on divine vengeance, it contains none of the “path of the righteous man” or “shepherd” imagery written specifically for the Tarantino screenplay. The inclusion of the fictional dialogue at a high-level military event has raised questions regarding the vetting process for the Secretary’s public remarks.
The footage quickly sparked a firestorm on social media, with critics questioning Hegseth’s fitness for office. Opponents were quick to capitalize on the error; California Governor Gavin Newsom shared a parody of the Pulp Fiction movie poster featuring Hegseth’s likeness.
Public reaction has been largely derisive. On various digital platforms, users characterized the blunder as “humiliating” for the administration, with some comparing the official Pentagon footage to a choreographed comedy sketch.“You Will Know My Call Sign Is Sandy-1”: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Sparks Outrage After Quoting ‘Pulp Fiction’ Monologue at Pentagon Prayer Service
This latest incident adds to a growing list of complications for Hegseth’s tenure. Appointed despite vocal opposition regarding his lack of traditional administrative experience, the Secretary has previously faced internal investigations following the alleged leak of classified defense information within a private messaging group.
The Pentagon has not yet issued a formal statement clarifying whether the Secretary was aware the passage originated from a Hollywood script or if the error was a result of a staff-level speechwriting failure. For now, the administration faces a renewed wave of criticism over the professionalism and qualification of its top defense official.
