A Reddit user asked the community for perspective after a heated argument with their parents over a surprise family get-together.

In their post, the user said their relatives had arranged a low-key dinner at an aunt’s house, but let them know only shortly before it was set to happen. By the time the invitation came through, the user had already committed to going out with friends. “We’d been planning this outing for weeks,” they wrote, noting that it was one of the rare occasions when everyone in the friend group was available.

When the user told their parents they didn’t want to cancel plans that were already on the calendar, things escalated fast. They said their parents insisted that “family comes first, no excuses,” leaving the user feeling dismissed rather than understood.

According to the post, the parents accused them of choosing to “run around with friends” instead of spending time with relatives they “barely see.” But the user explained that the distance from extended family was part of why last-minute gatherings felt stressful. “Every time I go to these gatherings, I end up sitting in a corner being asked awkward questions,” they wrote.

Those questions often focused on school, future plans, or personal life — conversations the user described as uncomfortable and draining. They added that the sudden invite gave them no time to mentally prepare for another evening of being put on the spot.

Despite the tension, the user stayed firm and reiterated that the night out had been arranged long before the dinner was mentioned. Their parents weren’t happy with that decision, calling them “selfish and childish.”

The user went out with friends anyway. They said the night itself went fine, but the mood at home changed immediately afterward. “My parents were cold to me when I got home and told me I embarrassed them by not showing up,” the user wrote, adding that the reaction made them wonder if they’d handled the situation wrong.

In the comments, many readers supported the user’s choice. One person wrote, “NTA, you already had plans way before they mentioned it.” Another added, “Sounds like you wouldn’t want to go even if you didn’t have plans…”
