A North Carolina teenager is facing criminal charges after investigators allege he was driving at high speed when his car struck another vehicle in Charlotte, killing a mother and her mother.
Jason Anthony Scott, 18, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of involuntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to a press release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Police say officers responded to a crash on Ardrey Kell Road at about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025. At the scene, authorities found Lorin Elizabeth Manley unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a damaged 2011 Honda CR-V. Her backseat passenger, Gloria Manley, was also unconscious. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by medics, police said.
Family members told WCNC Charlotte that a 12-year-old passenger survived but is recovering from multiple broken bones and a collapsed lung. A GoFundMe campaign created by loved ones confirmed the girl’s mother and grandmother were killed in the crash, and WBTV reports that Lorin was the girl’s mother while Gloria was her grandmother.
The fundraiser says the 12-year-old’s older sister is now “left to support” her through this “unimaginable loss and the challenges of recovery, all while grieving the loss of their mom and grandma.” It adds that the family was returning home from a shopping trip at the time.
Police say Scott was driving a 2013 BMW 335i and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to a local hospital, and the BMW had “heavy front-end damage,” according to the release.
“Speed is suspected to be a contributing factor for this crash,” police said. “Mr. Scott was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired. Impairment is not suspected for Ms. Lorin Manley, but the toxicology report is pending.”
According to court documents cited by WCNC, Queen City News, and WGHP, witnesses said they saw the BMW traveling at speeds higher than 100 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Scott appeared in court Tuesday and received a $300,000 secured bond, the outlets report. A judge also reportedly revoked his driver’s license and ordered him not to operate a motor vehicle.
It is not clear whether Scott has entered a plea or hired an attorney to comment.
