A newlywed couple’s dream honeymoon in Japan has turned into a medical crisis after the bride, just weeks after her wedding, was rushed to intensive care with life-threatening complications.

Sarah Danh, 27, and her husband Luke Gradl, 28, were married March 21 in Spring Branch, Texas. Less than three weeks later, the couple traveled to Tokyo for a planned 16-day honeymoon. Within 48 hours of arrival, Danh’s health rapidly deteriorated.

According to Gradl, Danh initially complained of feeling unwell on April 8, prompting the couple to rest at their hotel. By late April 9, her condition worsened dramatically, forcing an emergency hospital visit just before midnight. She was admitted to the ICU the following day.

Doctors diagnosed Danh with acute liver failure, a rare but severe condition that can lead to rapid organ shutdown. Her symptoms included jaundice, vomiting, fever, and extreme hepatic encephalopathy—a dangerous neurological condition caused by toxin buildup when the liver fails to function.

Medical staff have since reported further complications. Danh is now battling kidney failure and rising intracranial brain pressure, significantly increasing the risk to her life.

“She had no health issues at our wedding,” Gradl said, emphasizing the sudden and unexpected nature of her illness.

Danh, a labor and delivery nurse based in San Antonio, had recently completed her nursing degree and was described by family as healthy and active prior to the trip.

She remains in intensive care in Japan, undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), dialysis, blood transfusions, and plasma exchanges. Her condition remains unstable.

Gradl, who is currently training in flight school, is working to arrange an emergency medical evacuation to the United States. However, Japanese hospital policies require full payment of medical expenses before discharge—creating a significant financial barrier for the family.

In response, relatives have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical costs and facilitate her transfer home. The evacuation, being coordinated through AirMed, is expected to be complex and high-risk due to Danh’s fragile condition.

Gradl says he is relying on faith and public support as he navigates the crisis abroad.

“I love my wife with all of my heart,” he said. “This is a test like no other. We are praying she becomes stable enough for the flight home.”

The case underscores the unpredictable nature of acute medical emergencies abroad—and the logistical and financial challenges families often face when serious illness strikes far from home.
