SARASOTA, FL — A welfare check initiated by a concerned friend led Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies to a grim discovery last week: a young woman and her partner dead in what investigators are describing as a domestic murder-suicide.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement that Lily Z. Yard, 27, was found deceased in her home on February 22. Her partner, 40-year-old Jordan M. Rouff, was discovered at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Though transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment, Rouff was later pronounced dead.

A Concerning Call Triggers Police Response

The investigation began earlier that Sunday when an unidentified individual contacted authorities to request a welfare check on the couple. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the individual had received a phone call from a friend involved in the situation that contained “unusual and worrying” statements.

While deputies have not clarified whether the call originated from Yard or Rouff, the nature of the communication was alarming enough to prompt an immediate dispatch to the residence. Upon arrival, authorities discovered both individuals had sustained gunshot wounds to the head.

History of Domestic Instability

Detectives investigating the case revealed that Yard and Rouff were involved in a volatile, “on-again, off-again” relationship. Despite the reported instability, the couple had recently moved into the Sarasota home together.

Local affiliates FOX 13 and Tampa Bay 28 report that the Sheriff’s Office is officially treating the incident as domestic in nature. As of Tuesday, a specific motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, and there were no immediate records of prior domestic violence calls to the residence made public.

Rising Concerns Over Domestic Violence

This tragedy underscores a persistent trend of domestic escalation in Florida. According to state law enforcement data, domestic disputes involving firearms significantly increase the risk of lethality.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office continues to process evidence from the scene. While the primary suspects are accounted for, investigators are looking into the hours leading up to the shooting to determine if there were any missed warning signs or previous unreported incidents.

What’s Next: The Sheriff’s Office is expected to release a final forensic report once the medical examiner completes the formal autopsies. Local advocacy groups in Sarasota have used the incident to remind residents of available resources, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233), for those in escalating or “on-again, off-again” volatile environments.
