The daughter of a Michigan woman missing in the Bahamas is calling for U.S. federal intervention as local authorities transition their search into a recovery operation.
Lynette Hooker, of Onsted, Michigan, disappeared on the night of Saturday, April 4, after reportedly falling overboard during a dinghy transit between Hope Town and Elbow Cay. While Bahamian officials currently cite hazardous weather as the primary factor, Hooker’s family is questioning the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a formal statement, Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, urged American state and federal authorities to launch an independent investigation. Aylesworth revealed she has been “privy to very little information” and hinted at underlying complexities regarding the case.
“There have been prior issues brought to my attention, which may be important for any thorough investigation,” Aylesworth stated, though she declined to elaborate on the nature of those issues. “There needs to be an intensive review of the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident.”
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Hooker and her husband were returning to their yacht in a small dinghy when she went overboard. The husband reported that “strong currents” swept her away and that he eventually lost sight of her in the darkness. He alerted authorities early Sunday morning, April 5.
Richard Cook, team leader with Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue, confirmed that search efforts are no longer a rescue mission.
“It was just a lot of bad decisions,” Cook told reporters, noting the conditions were “pitch dark” with high winds and rough seas. “Night time, very windy, no moon out yet… very rough conditions for the small boat they were in.”
As of April 9, Bahamian investigators maintain they do not suspect foul play. However, several critical details remain unverified:
- Safety Gear: It is currently unclear if Hooker was wearing a life jacket.
- Timeline: There was a significant delay between the reported fall and the husband’s notification to authorities the following morning.
- Current Status: Recovery teams continue to monitor the waters around Elbow Cay, though no sign of Hooker has been found.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the daughter’s request for U.S. involvement. Efforts to reach Hooker’s husband for further comment have been unsuccessful.
