A dog made an unexpected cameo at the 2026 Winter Olympics — but no, Air Bud’s “husky brother” didn’t actually make it to the Games.
During women’s cross-country team sprint qualifying on Wednesday, Feb. 18, a dog suddenly darted onto the course just as skiers were finishing. The pup paused to glance toward the cameras, then seemed to notice the athletes and took off in pursuit.
On-course announcers laughed it off, joking, “Anybody lost their dog?” and noting the dog wasn’t really affecting the race. Still, they added it was fortunate the interruption happened during qualifying rather than later heats.

After the racers crossed the line and collapsed in exhaustion, the dog wandered over to sniff around before trotting into the finish area with everyone else — where volunteers and athletes happily obliged with pets and belly rubs.
The moment was memorable enough that Omega, the event’s official timing sponsor, even captured the dog with its photo-finish system, giving the unexpected “competitor” its own finish-line snapshot.

On the snow, Sweden’s Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist led qualifying in 6:29.94. Team USA’s Jessie Diggins and Julia Kern qualified seventh, 19.49 seconds back. In the final two hours later, Sweden won gold, with Switzerland taking silver and Germany bronze. Diggins and Kern moved up to finish fifth.
