Former St. Louis television news anchor Angelynn Mock has been found mentally unfit to stand trial in connection with the alleged stabbing death of her mother in Wichita, Kansas.

Mock, charged with first-degree murder, is accused of killing her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers, at their home on Oct. 31, 2025.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said a competency evaluation submitted to the court on Jan. 15 found Mock is not currently competent to proceed, reports KAKE. A judge ordered her committed to Larned State Hospital for additional evaluation and treatment, as required under Kansas law. Criminal proceedings are suspended while Mock undergoes treatment, though the case remains active.

Police were called to the residence just before 8 a.m. after Mock dialed 911 and claimed her mother had tried to kill her, prompting her to stab Avers in self-defense. Officers found Mock outside the home, bleeding and holding a towel. Inside, Avers was discovered dead in her bedroom with multiple stab wounds. Investigators reported locating several bloodied kitchen knives and a cheese grater near the body, according to KAKE.

According to a Nov. 4 affidavit, Mock told investigators she and her mother were discussing a job interview when Avers began sharpening knives and then attacked her. Mock said she acted to defend herself and made statements indicating she believed her mother was not who she appeared to be.

Court records show Mock had been living with her parents for several years after losing a job tied to alcohol-related issues. Per KAKE, she has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Her stepfather, Barry Avers, told investigators Mock had a history of psychiatric problems and angry outbursts, but said he had never known her to be violent.

After receiving medical treatment for her injuries, Mock was taken to the police station, where authorities said she made statements suggesting she believed her mother was the devil.
