As 2025 drew to a close, Donald Trump took aim at George Clooney, mocking the actor’s newly reported French citizenship and revisiting their long-running political feud.
The remarks followed a recent interview in which Clooney described Trump as “a big goofball” before his entry into electoral politics. Trump responded on Truth Social with a wide-ranging post that criticized Clooney’s political views, questioned his film career, and invoked the familiar campaign slogan “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Reports from The New York Times and other outlets this week said that France granted citizenship to Clooney, his wife Amal, and their children. Clooney, who was born in Kentucky, also retains U.S. citizenship.
Clooney answered Trump’s post with a pointed response of his own. “I totally agree with the current president,” he said in a statement. “We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”
In a separate interview with Variety, Clooney reflected on his earlier relationship with Trump, recalling that the two were once friendly before Trump entered politics.
“I knew him very well,” Clooney said. “He used to call me a lot, and he tried to help me get into a hospital once to see a back surgeon. I’d see him out at clubs and at restaurants. He’s a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed.”
During the interview, Clooney also criticized ABC News and CBS News for settling separate lawsuits brought by Trump, arguing that the media companies should have fought the cases more aggressively. “If CBS and ABC had challenged those lawsuits and said, ‘Go fuck yourself,’ we wouldn’t be where we are in the country,” he said. “That’s simply the truth.”
Clooney further took aim at Bari Weiss, founder of the center-right opinion outlet The Free Press, whom Paramount CEO David Ellison appointed to oversee CBS News after acquiring the company. Weiss later invited Clooney to visit the newsroom, a move that also drew his criticism.
