The investigation into the disappearance of 55-year-old American citizen Lynette Hooker took a significant turn Wednesday as Bahamian authorities took her husband, Brian Hooker, into custody. The arrest comes amid a parallel criminal investigation launched by the United States Coast Guard.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that Brian Hooker, 58, was detained in Marsh Harbour shortly after 7:00 p.m. on April 8. While charges have not been formally announced, officials stated the arrest is directly connected to the ongoing search for his wife, who vanished under mysterious circumstances on the night of April 4.

According to police reports, the couple departed Hope Town on a small dinghy at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday, transitng toward Elbow Cay. Brian Hooker later told investigators that Lynette fell overboard, taking the boat’s keys with her. He claimed he was forced to paddle the vessel back to shore manually to alert authorities, arriving early Sunday morning.

“Strong currents… carried [Lynette] away, and [Brian] lost sight of her,” police stated, recounting the husband’s initial testimony.

However, the victim’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has publicly challenged this narrative. Aylesworth cited a “volatile relationship” between the couple and called for a rigorous federal review of the facts.

Terrel A. Butler, a Bahamas-based attorney representing Brian Hooker, told reporters that his client “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing.” Butler emphasized that as the sole witness to the event, Brian’s account remains the only direct evidence of what transpired on the water.

“The previous history does not have anything to do with what actually took place on that day,” Butler said, dismissing allegations of a tumultuous relationship as irrelevant to the disappearance. Butler confirmed that Hooker had been cooperating with authorities prior to his arrest.

The case has escalated into a multi-agency effort. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Wednesday it is conducting its own criminal investigation into the matter, independent of the Bahamian search-and-rescue operation.

The search for Lynette Hooker remains active, utilizing:

  • Aerial Surveillance: Drone technology and U.S. Coast Guard aircraft.
  • Marine Assets: Divers and vessels from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (BASRA).
  • Land Teams: Local Fire and Rescue units combing the coastlines of the Abaco Islands.

As of April 10, 2026, Lynette Hooker remains missing. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the couple’s movements on the night of April 4 to contact local police or the U.S. Embassy.
