Rachel Tussey, a prominent Ohio mother and social media personality known for her advocacy of women in midlife, died Tuesday, March 17, following catastrophic complications from a routine elective surgery. She was 47.
Tussey, who documented her journey to 70,000 followers under the handle @midlifeunmuted, passed away at a hospice facility nearly two weeks after being removed from life support. Her death has sparked a high-profile investigation into the protocols of the outpatient surgical center where the procedure took place.
The Fatal Timeline
On Feb. 25, Tussey checked into the JourneyLite Surgery Center in Evendale, Ohio, for an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) performed by Dr. Shahryar Tork. Just hours before the procedure, Tussey posted a final video from her hospital bed, asking for prayers and expressing excitement for her “next chapter.”
According to statements from her husband, Jeremy Tussey, the surgery initially appeared successful. However, the situation turned critical in the recovery room:
- Immediate Post-Op: Tussey was reportedly conscious and speaking with her husband.
- Medical Emergency: Shortly after being administered the painkillers dilaudid and fentanyl, Tussey became pale and unresponsive.
- Resuscitation Failure: Medical staff administered Narcan (an opioid antagonist), but it failed to revive her.
- Brain Injury: Tussey was deprived of oxygen for over six minutes, resulting in a permanent anoxic brain injury. She was subsequently declared brain dead at Bethesda North Hospital.
Disputed Liability and Investigative Focus
The tragedy has resulted in a public shift of accountability between the surgeon and the surgical facility.
In a statement released while Tussey was in hospice, Dr. Shahryar Tork defended his surgical performance, maintaining that the procedure was completed “successfully and without complications.” Tork emphasized that the subsequent monitoring was the responsibility of staff contracted by the independent facility, JourneyLite, rather than his private practice.
“Because Rachel was scheduled to remain overnight, her post-operative monitoring was overseen by staff contracted by the independent facility,” Tork stated, adding that he has since discontinued all procedures at that center.
The Tussey family, represented by attorney Bernie Layne III, has remained focused on a comprehensive investigation. In a direct rebuttal to Tork’s statements, the family noted that the actions of “every medical professional and other entities” involved in this “preventable tragedy” would be thoroughly analyzed.
A Community in Mourning
Tussey was a celebrated figure in her community, recognized not only for her digital presence but for her local philanthropy. She recently organized significant donation efforts for victims of Hurricane Helene.
A GoFundMe campaign established to support her husband and three children has surpassed $35,000.
