A New York mother is sharing the terrifying moment her young son lost his pulse — and the medical team that brought him back.

Maria Carlin, 36, of Long Island, recounted how doctors and nurses revived her 4-year-old son, Jack, last year after he suddenly stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest. She spoke with the New York Post, ABC7 New York and NBC 4 New York about the ordeal, which began in July 2024 when Jack woke up in pain, struggling with a cough.

Maria said she rushed her son toward Huntington Hospital, but his condition worsened during the drive.

“All of a sudden, it sounded like he was breathing through a coffee straw, he was squeaking like a mouse,” she told ABC7. Moments later, she heard him slump forward in his car seat.

As panic set in, Maria faced an agonizing split-second decision: pull over to start CPR or keep driving to the emergency room.

“I just heard him fall forward in his car seat,” she said, describing the internal debate racing through her mind. “Do I continue driving, knowing that every minute that passes is another minute … closer to permanent brain damage?”

She chose to keep going. When they arrived, hospital staff immediately began working to revive Jack.

“I brought in a dead child, and they brought him back to life,” Maria told NBC 4. She said that after he regained consciousness, Jack looked at her and asked, “Mommy, why didn’t you want me to go to heaven?”

Jack was later transferred to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where doctors diagnosed him with a rare condition called laryngeal cleft. According to Cleveland Clinic, the condition involves an abnormal opening between a child’s larynx (voice box) and esophagus (food pipe), which can lead to choking, wheezing, coughing and serious breathing problems.

After surgery last year, Jack made a full recovery. This month, the family returned to Huntington Hospital to thank the doctors and nurses who saved his life.

“Thank you so much,” Jack told the staff, according to NBC 4.
