Federal and local investigators have narrowed their focus to two specific dates in January as the search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, enters its seventh week.
New reports indicate that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are canvassing the Tucson neighborhood where Guthrie vanished, specifically requesting surveillance footage from January 11 and January 24. The interest in these dates, which precede the February 1 kidnapping, suggests authorities are looking for evidence of pre-meditation or prior “casing” of the residence.
The Timeline of Disappearance
Nancy Guthrie was reportedly taken from her home against her will during the early morning hours of February 1. Forensic evidence recovered from the scene, including blood found on the exterior porch, has been confirmed by investigators to match Guthrie’s DNA.
Initial investigative efforts focused on Ring doorbell footage from January 11 (between 9:00 p.m. and midnight) and the morning of January 31. However, the latest inquiries into January 24 signal an expanded timeline.
Suspect Profile and Evidence
The FBI has released a profile of a primary suspect captured on surveillance video at Guthrie’s front door on the morning of the abduction. The individual is described as:
- Physicality: Male, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with an average build.
- Attire: Masked and armed, carrying a black, 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has publicly ruled out Guthrie’s relatives as suspects. While no persons of interest have been named, Nanos confirmed that investigators are exploring the high probability of an accomplice.
“We’ve got a lot of intel, a lot of leads,” Sheriff Nanos stated in a recent briefing. “Now it’s time to just go to work.”
The National Search and Reward
The Guthrie family has significantly escalated the pressure for information. Beyond the FBI’s initial $100,000 reward, the family has offered an additional $1 million for information leading to Nancy’s recovery or a conviction. They have also donated $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to bolster resources for the case.
In a statement shared via social media, Savannah Guthrie expressed the family’s ongoing distress, noting they are “aching for her and most of all just missing her.”
Ongoing Investigation
As DNA analysis continues on evidence collected from the Guthrie property, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department maintains that the investigation is active and “getting closer” to a breakthrough. Authorities are urging anyone with footage or information from the Tucson area on the specified dates to contact the FBI’s tip line.
