A British court has sentenced a couple to eight years in prison following the horrific death of their 32-year-old daughter, who was found “almost skeletal” and weighing just 79 pounds inside the family home.
Alan and Bernita Davies, both 60, appeared at Mold Crown Court on March 19, where they were sentenced for their roles in the death of Steffie Davies. The couple pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult, a charge downgraded from the original count of gross negligence manslaughter.
A Case of Extreme Neglect
Authorities discovered Steffie’s body on May 26, 2023, after Bernita Davies called for an ambulance. Paramedics arriving at the Wrexham residence immediately raised alarms regarding the “inhumane” conditions of the victim.
A subsequent forensic investigation and autopsy determined the cause of death to be sepsis triggered by infected pressure ulcers. Medical examiners also cited extreme malnutrition and dangerously low body weight as primary contributing factors.
Court testimony painted a harrowing picture of Steffie’s final weeks:
- Physical Condition: She was found with matted hair, suspected lice, and fungal infections.
- Environment: Prosecutors described her bed as “sodden,” indicating she had not been moved or cleaned for a significant period.
- Medical Immobility: Joint contractures had left her unable to eat or drink without direct assistance—help that her parents failed to provide.

‘Ghosted’ by Her Own Mother
The investigation revealed a chilling lack of empathy within the household. While Steffie suffered from worsening anxiety and had become increasingly reclusive, her parents reportedly ignored her physical and mental decline.
Evidence presented in court included text messages showing that Bernita Davies had “ghosted” her daughter. In one instance, Steffie messaged her mother pleading for help and protein drinks; the request went unanswered.
“As she lay in extreme pain, wasting away and dying… you simply ignored her,” Mrs. Justice Stacey told the defendants during sentencing. The judge noted there was “no evidence” the couple had shown their daughter any care, accusing them of “complete indifference” to her suffering.
Systemic Silence
Despite her deteriorating state, Steffie was not known to social or mental health services. Police confirmed that neither parent sought professional medical intervention as her health spiraled.
Detective Superintendent Sarah-Jayne Williams of the North Wales Police described the case as “difficult to comprehend.” She noted that Steffie was once a “fit and healthy woman” who was allowed to waste away by the very people responsible for her safety.
A Life of Lost Potential
In a statement released through the police, Steffie’s sister remembered her as a young woman who once showed great promise while studying animal care in college.
“She had so much potential but needed the right encouragement and support, which she simply did not get,” her sister stated. “Instead, she was left to fade into insignificance in the most inhumane way possible.”
The eight-year sentences for Alan and Bernita Davies mark the conclusion of a case that has shocked the local community and highlighted the lethal consequences of domestic neglect.
