A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in a late-night collision in Anaheim that police say was caused by an allegedly impaired driver who ran a red light.
The Anaheim Police Department said the crash happened around 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at the intersection of North Anaheim Boulevard and the SR-91 freeway. The woman was riding as a passenger in a light-colored Toyota four-door sedan and was trapped inside the vehicle after impact. Despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Authorities arrested Daniel Ramos, 24, who was driving a dark-colored Lexus sedan involved in the crash, after he allegedly “exhibited objective signs and symptoms of impairment,” according to police.
“Preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota was traveling southbound on North Anaheim Boulevard and entered the intersection when it was struck by the Lexus, which was traveling eastbound on the SR-91 freeway frontage road and failed to stop for a red traffic signal,” police said.
Ramos was booked into the Anaheim Detention Facility on felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges. Police said additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues, noting the passenger was pregnant at the time of her death.
The woman was identified by loved ones as 24-year-old Bianca Esquivel, according to NBC LA, KABC, and CBS News.
Her boyfriend, identified by KABC as Oscar, told the outlets the couple had just left In-N-Out after she satisfied a craving when the collision occurred. He said she was pregnant with her second child.

“We were laughing on the way back, we were just smiling. It was so fast. She screamed, she was like, ‘Oh my god,’ ” Oscar recalled to KABC.
“She was my best friend,” he added. “We were so excited. We were already planning stuff, buying clothes.”
The family started a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses for her boyfriend and funeral arrangements. On the site, relatives described Esquivel as “a devoted mother, a beloved sister and daughter, and a caring girlfriend” who planned to “return to school to pursue a degree in accounting and had her entire life ahead of her.”
Esquivel’s sister, Viri Esquivel, also told KABC that her sister was a homebody who loved spending time with family. She said Esquivel leaves behind a 4-year-old son.

“I personally don’t know how to answer, ‘Where’s my mommy?’ Because his mommy isn’t coming back,” she told the outlet.
Police said traffic investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances of the crash and that any criminal charges will be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for review.
