Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie addressed the “unbearable” public scrutiny and provided harrowing new details regarding her mother’s abduction in her first sit-down interview since the February disappearance.

Speaking with former colleague Hoda Kotb on Thursday, Guthrie, 54, described the “chaos and disbelief” that followed the Jan. 31 kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie from her Tucson home.

Family Cleared Amid Investigation

In the weeks following the disappearance, unfounded rumors suggested family involvement. Guthrie described the whispers and innuendo as “piling pain upon pain,” stating she would never understand the origin of such speculation.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos moved to squash those narratives on Feb. 16, officially clearing all siblings and spouses as suspects. “The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple,” Nanos stated, labeling any alternative suggestions “cruel.”

Guthrie reaffirmed the family’s bond during the interview, noting that her sister Annie and brother-in-law Tommaso Cioni—the last to see Nancy before she vanished—were the matriarch’s primary caregivers.

Evidence of a Violent Encounter

Guthrie dismissed early theories that her mother, who suffered from debilitating back pain and limited mobility, may have wandered off.

“There was no ‘wander off,'” Guthrie said, citing physical evidence of a struggle. According to the investigation, the front door was found propped open, blood was discovered on the doorstep, and the home’s Ring camera had been forcibly removed.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are currently seeking an unidentified armed male captured on surveillance footage appearing to tamper with the doorbell camera. Guthrie expressed gratitude for the technology that captured the suspect, hoping it would silence “irresponsible” rumors.

A $1.1 Million Call for Information

The Guthrie family remains desperate for answers, increasing the private reward for information leading to a recovery or arrest to $1 million. This is in addition to a $100,000 active reward offered by the FBI.

Amid the personal tragedy, the family has also donated $500,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to support other families facing similar uncertainty.

“Please, if you hear this message… tell what you know and help us bring our beloved mom home,” Guthrie pleaded. “Please be the light in the dark.”
