Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., described New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as part of the “new generation” of leaders that many young Democrats are eager to see in office.

Mamdani’s record — from his past criticisms of police to his defense of those using the phrase “Globalize the Intifada” — has drawn scrutiny from both Republicans and Democrats concerned about his far-left positions.

Speaking with NBC News correspondent Julie Tsirkin after a Monday night town hall, Slotkin acknowledged the event was “overwhelmingly composed of White seniors and older voters” but repeatedly emphasized the economic frustrations young people face.

Slotkin, who narrowly defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s 2024 Senate race, said the Democratic Party must undergo a fundamental transformation to regain political strength.

“I think this is the existential issue of our time — a shrinking middle class — and this idea that young people feel like they’ve done everything right, and they don’t have the same opportunities their parents had. They feel frustration about that,” Slotkin told Tsirkin.

She added that the desire for fresh faces in leadership is equally strong. “I’m 49 years old, so I’m a good deal older than our youngest voters, and yet I’m considered the spring chicken in the Senate. They don’t see themselves in elected leadership.”

When asked if the high cost of living helped propel Mamdani’s unexpected win in New York, Slotkin agreed. “I’ve said very openly that I wouldn’t be called an expert on New York City politics, but the two messages were like a blinking red light. How can you miss them? People are still extremely focused on the cost of living and how they can’t get ahead. Still the motivating issue. And then, number two, they want that new generation of leadership.”

“I may not agree with a number of things Mr. Mamdani is proposing,” Slotkin said, “but it’s hard to miss the message of that election — which I think was very similar, frankly, to the election we had in November. Cost of living is still the biggest issue for the people I talk to.”
