A shoplifting suspect is accused of attempting to shoot a police officer inside an Ohio Walmart, according to a police statement and body-camera footage.

Canton police said a patrol officer arrested Shane Newman, 21, and Katerina Jeffrey, 23, on Thursday afternoon on suspicion of shoplifting. The two were taken to the store’s loss prevention office while the officer worked to process the arrest, police said.

According to the department, Newman allegedly pulled out a handgun and tried to fire at the officer, but the weapon did not discharge.

In the bodycam video, the officer repeatedly asks Newman whether he has anything on him the officer should know about. Newman responds that he only has his phone and a small container, which he hands over. The officer pats him down, appears not to find anything, and tells him to sit.

A short time later, Newman is seen turning in his chair, drawing a gun, and pointing it toward the officer. The video shows a Walmart employee rushing in and trying to stop him, and the officer then grapples with Newman, taking him to the ground. No shots are fired.

As the struggle unfolds, Jeffrey can be heard shouting “no” repeatedly and pleading, “No Shane, please, no.” She also appears to urge him to stop during the confrontation.

Police said Newman is now facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, and weapons and drug-related offenses. Jeffrey was charged with complicity to commit robbery.

Authorities did not immediately say where Newman was being held or whether he has legal representation.
