Toddler Gives Herself an Extreme Haircut. Then Her Dad Goes Viral for Having the Sweetest Reaction 

A California mom got an unexpected surprise from her youngest daughter after tucking her into bed early for the night.

For Amanda Hawkins, bedtime started like any normal evening as she settled her then-3-year-old daughter, Juniper, into bed. The 32-year-old mom assumed her little one was winding down to sleep — but Juniper had very different plans.

“Unbeknownst to us, she had snuck the homeschool safety scissors into her room with her,” Hawkins says.

Shortly after being tucked in and kissed goodnight, Juniper pulled out the scissors and decided to give herself a bold new haircut. Her once long, golden hair that fell past her shoulders was chopped into an uneven, choppy bob. Hawkins says it was the very first time her daughter had ever taken scissors to her own hair — and it was quite the debut.

“I was initially just super sad because I was just admiring how long and golden her hair was earlier that day when she was swinging on our swing,” she recalls. “It was the first time she ever used scissors on her hair, and boy was it a doozy!”

A now-viral video, shared on TikTok by Hawkins’ sister Holly, shows the aftermath of the at-home makeover. In the clip, Juniper looks visibly upset as Amanda’s husband, Patrick Hawkins, 36, gently inspects the damage. Off-camera, Juniper’s siblings giggle, with one even suggesting that she wear a wig to cover her new look.

Seeing how distressed his daughter is, Patrick chooses reassurance over frustration. He looks her in the eyes and tells her she “still looks beautiful” as he walks her off to get cleaned up, turning what could have been a scolding into a sweet parenting moment.

In the caption of the TikTok post, Holly praises her brother-in-law’s calm approach, writing that she isn’t sure she would have had that much patience.

Amanda says she’s grateful for the way her husband handled the situation and how he gave their daughter exactly what she needed in that moment.

“I love how my husband has a way of analyzing situations with our children and seeing that she was visibly upset with her own actions,” she says. “He made a point to tell her the truth, [which is] that she was still just as beautiful.”

Now, nearly two years later, Amanda says 5-year-old Juniper’s hair is still growing back to its former length — and she’s a lot more careful around scissors.

“It is still not quite as long as it used to be nearly two years later, but she has definitely learned her lesson and this has just become a funny memory captured on camera for our family.”

Looking back, Amanda says that while there have been a few small mishaps involving scissors in their home, nothing compares to that night.

“There may have been some minor incidents with scissors,” she says, “but this incident by far takes the cake.”
