President Donald Trump said Thursday night that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation for Canada to join the “Board of Peace” has been withdrawn, according to a post on Truth Social.
The “Board of Peace,” launched by Trump this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is intended to guide Gaza’s transition out of war. The initiative has drawn mixed reactions from U.S. allies.
Why It Matters
Canada’s potential participation could shape humanitarian operations and diplomatic coordination around the U.S.-driven approach to Gaza’s reconstruction. The proposed membership terms—including a draft provision offering permanent seats for $1 billion—have sparked questions about governance and legitimacy.
What To Know
In his Truth Social post, Trump addressed Carney directly, writing:
“Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time. Thank you for your attention to this matter! DONALD J. TRUMP PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”
Carney had previously told reporters he agreed for Canada to join in principle, but said details still needed to be worked out.
Trump unveiled the “Board of Peace” in Davos, naming an executive panel that includes U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, Tony Blair, Ajay Banga, Robert Gabriel and Marc Rowan to spearhead the effort.
Some countries have declined or deferred participation, including France, Norway and Sweden.
What People Are Saying
Republican Congressman Jimmy Patronis of Florida, on X Thursday: “.@POTUS created the Board of Peace to bring together nations willing to collaborate in good faith for peace. Carney has made it clear he’s not interested in that mission. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
Rubio, in a White House release on Thursday: “We are here today because of President Trump’s vision. If we go back just a few months ago, people thought what was happening in Gaza was impossible to solve… No one thought that that would ever come to a resolution without more fighting and more bloodshed along the way… But President Trump had the vision and the courage to dream the impossible, to believe that it was doable, and to pursue it with all of his heart.”
Trump, in the White House release on Thursday: “This Board has the chance to be one of the most consequential bodies ever created, and It’s my enormous honor to serve as its Chairman… Today, the first steps toward a brighter day for the Middle East and a much safer future for the world are unfolding right before your very eyes. Together, we are in a position to have any credible chance… to end decades of suffering, stop generations of hatred and bloodshed, and forge a beautiful, everlasting, and glorious peace for that region.”
