A woman is recovering after being badly injured in a dog attack at a home in southwestern Ireland.

Emergency services were called to a residential property in Pallaskenry, County Limerick, on Friday, Dec. 12, after reports of an incident involving a dog, the Gardaí (Ireland’s national police force) said in a statement. A woman in her 30s was taken to a hospital in Limerick with critical injuries that were described as non-life-threatening, according to police.

After the attack, the dog was removed by the local dog warden. Multiple outlets reported the animal was an XL bully-type dog.

An XL bully is considered the largest type of American bully, according to the BBC. The U.K. government has described the dogs as large, muscular animals with “a blocky head,” features that can suggest significant strength, the outlet reported.

Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has also said the XL Bully type is a variant within the wider American Bully category and is typically larger and more muscular than other American Bully types, including the Micro, Pocket, Standard and Classic.

The reports come months after Ireland introduced restrictions affecting XL bully-type dogs, with exemptions available under certain conditions. Under the rules, owners may be required to show the dog is neutered, microchipped and licensed, with additional controls applying in public, including muzzling and keeping the dog on a strong leash no longer than two meters, handled by someone over 16 who can control the animal.

Following Friday’s incident, the Limerick Leader reported the dog is scheduled to be euthanized.
