A Labrador retriever had a heartwarming way of thanking the firefighters who came to his rescue after a playful game of fetch turned into a dangerous situation.

The Setauket Fire Department shared on Facebook that on Aug. 20, they received a call about a young dog trapped between concrete balusters.

Fire Chief Charles Regulinski told PEOPLE that when his Long Island-based team was dispatched, they weren’t sure what to expect.

“We were anticipating a situation involving something lightweight that could easily be bent or taken apart. Unfortunately, the pup’s head was wedged between heavy concrete balusters,” he explained.

Of the department’s roughly 3,600 annual emergency calls, only a few involve animals, Regulinski added. “We’ve rescued kittens and ducks from storm drains, freed deer stuck in fences, and even dealt with cats refusing to come down from trees.”

When crews arrived, they found Leo, a 4-month-old Labrador, visibly nervous but cooperative. “He quickly warmed up to everyone,” said Regulinski. “He was one of the best patients we’ve ever had — no barking, growling, or resistance.”

Rescuers first tried using dish soap to help slide Leo free, but the gap remained too tight. They then carefully employed a hydraulic rescue spreading tool, known as the “Jaws of Life,” to widen the balusters. One firefighter shielded Leo’s head while another slowly created enough space for him to slip out — a process that took about 10 minutes.

Once safe, Leo immediately expressed his gratitude. “He showed his appreciation by licking and snuggling every member of the crew,” said the chief.

Leo’s owner was understandably anxious during the ordeal but calmed once firefighters laid out their rescue plan.

Regulinski praised his department’s dedication: “Every one of our members shows up ready to help neighbors in need. That sense of community is what makes Setauket Fire Department such a special place.”

He also noted that, like many volunteer fire departments nationwide, they are always in need of new members. “If helping your community is something you’re interested in, reach out to your local fire department,” he said.
