Donald Trump issues ultimatum over SAVE Act

President Donald Trump issued a high-stakes legislative ultimatum on Sunday, declaring that no deals should be reached with Senate Democrats unless they first pass the SAVE America Act. The move effectively stalls the upper chamber’s agenda as the President demands sweeping changes to federal election laws, including mandatory proof of citizenship and photo identification for all voters.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump characterized the legislation as “far more important than anything else” currently before the Senate. He specifically rejected a proposed $5 billion cut to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) funding, stating it would remain “unacceptable” unless Democrats approve a package including paper ballots, strict voter ID requirements, and a near-total ban on mail-in voting.

Expanding the Legislative Battlefield

The President’s demands extend beyond the ballot box. Trump insisted that any final agreement must include restrictions on transgender participation in women’s sports and a federal ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors.

This directive follows a Saturday vote where Senate Democrats successfully blocked a Republican-sponsored amendment aimed at prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in female sports categories. Trump urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to “lump everything together” and, if necessary, “kill the filibuster” to force the measures through.

Democratic Opposition and Public Sentiment

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has vowed to block the measure, labeling the SAVE America Act a vehicle for “voter suppression.” Schumer stated on X that Democrats would “hold the floor” to ensure the bill does not pass “under any circumstances, no matter how long it takes.”

Despite the partisan deadlock in Washington, recent data suggests the President’s platform resonates with a significant portion of the electorate:

  • Broad Support: An early March Harvard Harris survey revealed that 71% of voters support the SAVE America Act.
  • Citizenship Requirements: 85% of respondents believe only U.S. citizens should be permitted to vote, a view showing rare bipartisan consensus.
  • Integrity vs. Access: 54% of voters prioritized the prevention of voter fraud over concerns regarding voting access.

A Hardline Stance

The President’s rhetoric also targeted members of his own party. He called on Leader Thune to identify any Republicans who vote against the measure, suggesting their political careers would be over. “They will never be elected again!” Trump warned, adding that lawmakers should be prepared to stay in D.C. through the Easter recess to finalize the legislation.

As of Monday morning, the White House and the Democratic Party have not issued formal responses to the President’s latest demands.
